MONASTERIES-CHAPELS

The
climate of Parnitha (snow, heavy fogs, etc.) and the difficulty
in approaching it (the first main road was completed in 1928),
made it inattractive for the building of monasteries and churches.

Aghia Triada chapelThere
was only one monastery on Parnitha, at Aghia Triada, where today
lies only a small chapel.

However,
at the foothills of Parnitha there are a lot of monasteries,
old and recent. Most important of them are:

• Τhe
monastery of Koimisi Theotokou Kleiston, which was built during
the 17th century. It is situated South-Southwest of Parnitha,
at the entrance of the Keladonas’ gorge and 4 Km away from Fyli
village. Initially, it was a monk monastery and when founded,
all the ascetes, living at the caves of the gorge moved into.
Today it is a nun monastery.

• The
monk monastery of Aghios Kyprianos and Ioustini, which is situated
2 Κm North of Fyli, at 500 m, and founded in 1961.

• The
nun monastery of Gennisi Theotokou, situated 5 Κm North-West
of Acharnai at Ntardiza, at 500 m, founded in 1930.

Koimisi Theotokou Monastery • The
nun monastery of Koimisi Theotokou situated east of Thrakomakedones,
at 400 m, founded in 1938.

• The
monk monastery of Aghia Paraskevi, situated north of Acharnai,
at Katzanas area, at 190 m, founded in 1930.

There
are also a lot of chapels at Parnitha. Most of them were built
near springs or wells, leaving only a few with no water close
to them. However, all of them lie in marvellous locations. These
chapels are:

Aghios Petros' chapel at Mola
Next to springs: Aghios Petros at Mola, Aghios Georgios at Keramidi,
Aghia Paraskevi at Roumani, Aghia Paraskevi at Fyli’s spring,
Aghios Merkourios and Aghia Triada at concurrent areas, east
of Parnitha.

•
Next to wells: Aghia Triada at Avlona, Aghios Georgios, Aghios
Nikolaos at Loimiko.

•
Without water close to them: Aghios Nikolaos and Profitis Ilias
at Metoxi, Profitis Ilias at Voutima, Aghia Paraskevi at Mporsi.
